- Story Text: All Israel mourned for twenty-four hours--starting at duck on Monday (14 April)--the 10,000 war dead since the country's independence in 1948.
Simple ceremonies were held throughout the country to mark this annual Day of Remembrance....led by the traditional lighting of the memorial flame in Israeli-occupied Jerusalem by President Ephraim Katzir.
Sirens wailed throughout the country to mark the occasion, and at the ceremony led by President Katzir the last post was played as contingents from all arms of the services stood guard by the memorial.
The Day of Remembrance is followed by Independence Day. This year, however, there were no large military parades which have marked the occasion in the past. This austerity mood is partly a result of the country's mounting inflation rate. It also reflects the failure of US Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger to bring the beginnings of peace to the area.
