- Story Text: Israel's Prime Minister Mrs. Golda Meir delivered a "State of the Nation" address to the Knesset -- Israeli Parliament -- on Tuesday, May 26, in which she blamed increased tensions in the Middle East on the growing Soviet involvement in Egypt.
Mrs. Meir said that the increased Soviet involvement was encouraging Egypt in its plan to renew its "war of attrition" against Israel. She also said that recent Soviet moves were without precedent in the region.
The Israeli leader called for the current crisis to be viewed against the background of President Nasser's abrogation of the ceasefire a year ago. She called the decision "typical of the Egyptian policy all along the road of the aggression against Israel."
President Nasser's concept of peace, Mrs. Meir said, was that Israel must withdraw to the pre-June 1967 borders and give up her sovereignty in favour of the Arab Palestinians. There would no longer be any need to continue aggression as President Nasser's goal would have been achieved were these conditions fulfilled, added the Prime Minister.
Mrs. Meir postponed for a week delivery of the statement which usually is made at the beginning of each session term in order to hear the results of Foreign Minister Abba Eban's tour of Canada, the United States and Britain.
An eight-hour debate was held after Mrs. Meir addressed the Knesset for two hours.
