- Story Text: Ultra-nationalist Israelis staged a mass march from the town of Bethel to the ancient city of Jericho on Sunday (18 April) to emphasise their claims that the West Bank belongs to the Jews.
The march was made by about 40,000 people -- some of them carrying rifles and pistols -- and it passed through several Arab villages.
In Ramallah, hundreds of Arabs staged a silent counter rally of protest. Israeli troops cordoned off the area of the Arab rally and no major incidents were reported.
Ramallah had been the scene of clashes between troops and Arab demonstrators on Saturday (17 April) following demonstrations over the deaths of two Arabs -- one was shot in an inter-Arab fight and the other was a child accidentally killed by an Israeli security official.
The ultra-nationalists' march was also without incident. Israeli soldiers, with guns at the ready, and army vehicles patrolled the winding route to Jericho.
The marchers waved flags and sang patriotic songs, but according to Reuters many Israelis condemned their action as an unwarranted demonstration by fanatics.
