- Story Text: Foreign mediators have been shuttling between
self-ruled Gaza and Jerusalem in an effort to smooth out
difficulties in the peace negotiations between Israel and the
Palestinians.
German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer met Israeli
Foreign Minister David Levy in Jerusalem on Wednesday (July
28).
Later on Wednesday he is scheduled to hold separate talks
with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and then will head to
self-ruled Gaza Strip for talks with Palestinian President
Yasser Arafat.
In the last two days, the European Union's Middle East
envoy Miguel Moratinos has travelled between Jerusalem and
Gaza for talks between Arafat and Barak.
The foreign mediators aimed to smooth out difficulties
between the sides following Barak's proposal to delay Israeli
army troop redeployment from parts of the West Bank at a
summit with Arafat late on Tuesday (July 27).
Palestinians said Barak's insistence that Arafat take two
weeks to mull over ideas about changing the Wye
land-for-security accord was "a waste of time".
Barak pledged to implement all aspects of the deal if
Arafat rejected his proposal.
