- Story Text: United Nations envoy Gunnar Jarring, making a bid to resume his Middle East peace mission at a time of new Israeli-Lebanese clashes, wound up his initial talks in Jerusalem on Friday (February 25th). Visnews cameraman Itzchak Herbst filmed Dr. Jarring as he left Lod airport on his way to Cyprus -- headquarters of his mission.
Though initial reactions to his latest negotiations with Arab and Israeli leaders have not been optimistic, there have been reports that Dr. Jarring will urge further talks in Jerusalem and in Arab capitals.
SYNOPSIS: Lod Airport -- and the end of another Middle East peace initiative by United Nations Envoy Gunnar Jarring on Friday. Tight security was preserved by Israeli officials.
Dr. Jarring's latest mission came at a time of new clashes and increased tension between the Israelis and the Lebanese. He had met in turn Egyptian, Jordanian and Israeli leaders in an effort to resume his peace mission. This has been stalled since February last year when he sought an Israeli commitment to withdraw from Arab territory occupied since the Six Day War. Reactions to the latest talks haven't been encouraging, but there are reports that Dr. Jarring plans further contacts with Arab capitals and Jerusalem to keep his initiative alive.
