  • Story Text: A group of about 50 Arabs deported by Israeli authorities from the West Bank of the Jordan and the Gaza Strip went on hunger strike outside Red Cross headquarters in Amman on Monday (February 14). They issued demands to the Israeli government for their return, and appealed to international organisations and the Jordanian Government for help.

    The Prime Minister, Mr Ahmed Al-Lawzi, visited the deportees and after hearing their requests, agreed to help -- with offers of work on the Fast Bank; allowing relatives from the West Bank to visit them; and trying to get them back to their homes.

    SYNOPSIS: A group of about fifty Arabs deported from Israeli-held territory began a hunger strike in protest at their removal outside Red Cross headquarters in Amman, Jordan, on Monday.

    The deportees, expelled from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank of the Jordan River, issued demands to the Israeli government for their return, and appealed to international organisations and the Jordanian Government for help.

    On Tuesday, Jordanian Prime Minister Ahmed Al-Lawzi visited the hunger-strikers and accepted a petition from them calling for his help. A spokesman for the group estimated that abut a thousand Arabs had been similarly deported from their homes since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

    After hearing their pleas Prime Minister Lawzi did promise help - including jobs on the East Bank, visits from West Bank relatives, and assistance in trying to get them back to their homes
