  • Story Text: Israel's Prime Minister Golda Meir arrived in Bucharest on Thursday (4 May), for four days of talks with Rumanian leaders on the Middle East. The visit is the first by an Israeli Prime Minister to a communist country.

    Mrs. Meir started her discussions on Thursday with her host, Premier Ion Gheorghe Maurer, but the high point of her stay in Bucharest will be the meeting on Friday with President Nicholas Ceausescu.

    President Ceausescu invited the Israeli Prime Minister to Bucharest upon returning from talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in Cairo, giving rise to talk of a Rumanian mediation bid in the Middle East.

    Since then, however, sources in Bucharest have tries to minimise speculation of mediation. Despite this, Israeli officials point to several instances in the past when Rumania has played a quiet role behind the scenes in advancing solutions for peaceful settlement of world problems.
