- Story Text: Four thousand people marched through Jerusalem on Wednesday (23 August) to protest against a government decision not to allow the people of two villages near the Lebanon border to return to their homes.
The villagers were evacuated form Bir'im and Ikrit in 1948 during hostilities near the border. The residents were promised that they would be allowed to return when peace was restored.
However, a recent request by the villagers to be allowed to reoccupy their homes has been turned down by the government. Both Bir'im and Ikirt are within a few miles of Lebanon, in an area which the Israeli Government believes harbours many terrorist groups.
The Jerusalem demonstration was led by the greek Catholic Archbishop Joseph Raya who say he was acting not for a political or religious cause, but for a human purpose. He says: "It is the right of people to live in their own country in security and peace."
