  • Story Text: Research is being carried out in Israel into the detection of factors likely to lead to brain damage in babies suffering from jaundice.

    The research is being done at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Centre, under the supervision of Professor S.H. Blondheim and Dr. N. Kaufmann.

    The two men have accepted an invitation from the Greek Ministry of Social Welfare to demonstrate their techniques in Greece.

    They'll spend three months in a laboratory at the Aghia Sofia Hospital in Athens.

    SYNOPSIS: At the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Centre in Israel - important research into the factors that cause brain damage in babies suffering from jaundice. Blood samples are being taken from badly jaundiced babies -- and the samples are being tested to show whether there is an excess of a substance known as bilirubin in the blood. If there is, the baby is in danger of suffering serious brain damage. Professor Blondheim is watching the progress of the experiments closely. He and Dr. Kaufmann -- also at the Medical Centre -- have created wide interest in medical circles and both have been invited to demonstrate their techniques in Athens.

    The substance the scientists look for -- bilirubin -- is excess pigment. If there's to much of it, the blood is unable to control it. Interest has been intense in Greece -- where jaundice among the new-born is a much more serious problem than in Israel.

    The test take only short time. In this case -- a positive result. The liquid in the test tube shows a blue ring -- indicating that the baby will need a blood transfusion if brain damage is to be avoided.
