- Story Text: Jews carried Israeli flags and chanted in a demonstration in Paris on Thursday night (11 January). They were welcoming the visit of Israeli Premier Golds Meir for a Socialist International meeting.
The demonstration was in response to the bombing on Tuesday of the Paris offices of the Jewish Agency. The Agency, which has offices around the world, is now an emigration organisation. Previously it was the "shadow government" of the Jewish population in Palestine before Israel achieved statehood in 1948.
SYNOPSIS: Several hundred Jews demonstrated in Paris on Thursday night. They were welcoming Israeli Prime Minister Mrs. Golda Meir to Paris for a meeting of the Socialist International.
Police stood by in case of trouble, but they weren't needed. There were fears that anti-Jewish organisations might try to break up the demonstration. The Jews held the rally as an answer to the bombing, earlier in the week of the Paris offices of the Jewish Agency. The Agency is one of similar offices throughout the world. It used to be the equivalent of an Embassy for Jews in Palestine, before Israel became a state. It's now an emigration organisation. There have been threats of more bombings during Mrs. Meir's visit.
