  • Story Text: Sheikh Jaber Da'ash MUADI, political head of the Druze community of Israel, took up his post this week as deputy Minister of Communications. Sheikh Muadi, a native of the Gallilee Druze village of Jerka (4500 inhabitants) is a man of 52 years of a ago, a father of ten children (7 sons and 3 daughters) and comes from a village of farmers. He played a leading role on the political scene of Israel ever since the State of Israel came into being. He engaged himself politically as a member of Mapai (Labour Party), the biggest party in Israel of which "Shituf ve'ahvah" (Cooperation and Fraternity) was the Mu'adi led faction of Druze, and in 1952 he became a member of the Knesset, the second Knesset of Israel and remained a member ever since (Knesset - Parliament building and parliament). Sheikh Muadi is the second member of one of the minority groups in Israel to reach the rank of deputy minister, the first one having been the deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Zuabi, an Israeli Arab from Nazareth. Sheikh Jaber Da'ash Muadi was sentenced to death by the Syrians in 1958, a sentence which was announced over the Syrian radio and in tye Syrian press at the time, for a) having generally cooperated with the Israeli Jews and b) for having recruited Druze, who were once in Syria, into tye minority units of the Israeli army.
