- Story Text: A torchlight gathering at the Jerusalem home of President Zalman Shazar on Sunday (September 24) began a year of celebration to mark Israel's 25th anniversary of independence, which takes place next May 7th. Independence day itself will be marked with a military parade through Jerusalem, but festivities were started early to avoid clashes with preparations for parliamentary elections in November 1973.
Israel became a state in May 1948, after the end of a British mandate to rule over the territory, then internationally known as Palestine.
SYNOPSIS: In Jerusalem on Sunday, at the home of Israeli President Zalman Shazar, a torchlight gathering was held to begin a whole year celebrating the nation's 25th anniversary of independence. Although the anniversary falls in May NEXT year, celebrations have started early so they don't clash with preparations for the parliamentary elections of November 1973.
Symbolic torches were lit by representatives of various Jewish organisations and early settlers who remember when Israel became a nation in May 1948 -- after the end of the British mandate administering the territory, then internationally known as Palestine. Among those who lit torches was President Shazar himself.
