  • Story Text: Armed police and Civil Defence guards ringed the Haifa District Court on Thursday (25 January) when two Jews and four israeli Arabs were charged with being members of a Syrian-backed spy and sabotage network.

    One of the Jewish accused, former Israeli paratrooper Ehud Adiv, was charged with giving Syrian Intelligence details about Israeli battle dispositions, weapons, military headquarters, senior officers, arms production and air defence.

    The six made only a brief appearance in court after being delivered to the rear door in a well guarded police van. They made no objections when Judge Emmanuel Slonim remanded them in custody for trial next month.

    They are part of a group of 40 Israeli Arabs and six Jews arrested by security authorities, who say they broke up the spy network early last month.

    SYNOPSIS: Four Israeli Arabs and two Jews, accused of being involved in a Syrian-operated spy network, were indicted at the Haifa District Court on Thursday.

    Armed police and Civil Defence Guards surrounded the court building, following threats of a demonstration by members of the Israeli Rakach - New Communist - Party. The entire square in front of the court was cordoned off. Everyone was searched as they entered the building.

    The six accused were brought to the courthouse in a well guarded police van. It's alleged the six passed on military information to Syria.

    Handcuffed in pairs, the accused were led into the court to face Judge Emmanuel Slonim. They are part of a group of forty israeli Arabs and six Jews arrested by security authorities recently.

    The accused made no objections when they were remanded in custody for trial next month. If found guilty they will face the death sentence or life imprisonment.
