- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has met United States (U.S.) Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in London for talks on the Middle East peace process.
Albright and Netanyahu settled down in London on Friday (November 14) for what was expected to be a tough meeting.
Albright arrived in Britain earlier in the day on the first leg of a round-the-world trip on which she will make a fresh attempt to persuade Israeli and Palestinian leaders to put the Middle East peace process back on track.
Earlier on Friday, Netanyahu, who is in Britain for a two-day visit, said allegations that Israel was the obstacle to Middle East peace were "rubbish" and he insisted that the country was keeping international accords "to the letter." Albright is said to be displeased that Netanyahu has defied her call in September for a "time-out" on the construction of new settlements in Arab East Jerusalem.
U.S. officials are concerned that the lack of progress in the Middle East peace process is undermining U.S. policy in the entire region, including its ability to mount a strong international counterweight to the crisis with Iraq over U.N. weapons inspections.
Albright is due to travel to Bern in Switzerland to meet Palestinian President Yasser Arafat on Saturday.
U.S. officials said they did not expect an agreement, or even a working document to emerge from Albright's talks with Netanyahu or Arafat.
The main point of Albright's meetings in London and Bern were to keep the two parties from losing progress they had achieved in Washington last week during working-level negotiations, they said.
