- Story Text: The Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army (SLA) on Monday (June 12) released five Arab prisoners from a jail which in a border anti-guerrilla zone Israel occupies in the south Lebanon.
They were the fourth batch of detainees released from Khiam prison in the 15-km (nine mile) self-declared Israel security zone since February.
Two of the released prisoners were guerrillas of PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) chief Yasser Arafat's main Fatah group, held for four years at the jail. The remaining three were Lebanese, the sources added without elaborating.
Monday's releases brought to 61 the number of detainees freed this year from Khiam prison, where about 250 Lebanese and other Arab captives are imprisoned without trial.
No humanitarian agency has been allowed into Khiam prison since its establishment in 1985. A Beirut-based humanitarian group Support Committee for Lebanese in Israeli Prisons, which is lobbying to pressure Israel to improve conditions at Khiam jail, said 14 captives have died in detention or after release as a result of maltreatment in the prison.
