- Story Text: Norway's Foreign Minister held talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Friday (August 19) on the first anniversary of the Norwegian sponsored talks which led to last September's Middle East peace accord.
Bjoern Tore Godal and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin met for talks at the Israeli Defence Ministry in Tel Aviv. Godal said afterwards his country, which promoted the initial talks in secret, remained committed to the peace process. He described his meeting with Rabin as being very useful.
Godal later travelled to Gaza City to meet Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat in the self-rule territory that the Oslo-backed talks helped create.
Before negotiations with Arafat he indicated Norway's commitment to providing the Palestinian Authority with concrete assistance and full support.
Arafat later used a news conference with Godal to warn his opposition Hamas group he would not allow it to destroy the Palestinian-Israeli peace accord.
