- Story Text: A ship carrying 5,000 live sheep from Jordan bound for Gaza arrived in Israel on Tuesday (December 13).
The Noor 1 Panama -- named after Jordan's Queen Noor -- docked at Eilat port. The sheep were then herded off the ship and on to waiting trucks to be driven to the autonomous area of Gaza, where they will be slaughtered.
Doctor Mohammed Zabedi, Head of Autonomous Services, said the shipment of sheep was a "humanitarian" act to help reduce meat prices in Gaza.
Doctor Hillel Adiri, Israeli autonomy coordinator for water and agriculture, said the shipment will cut the price of meat in Gaza by approximately one third.
Adiri said the sheep shipment is part of an agreement between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) which allows 5,000 sheep to be imported annually into Gaza.
