- Story Text: Israel officially handed over welfare and tourism offices in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday (November 15) as Palestinians throughout the West Bank and self-rule enclaves celebrated Palestinian Independence Day.
The handover was a first step towards Palestinian self-rule in the occupied West Bank.
In the self-rule enclave of Gaza, schoolchildren waved PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) flags, marched in the streets, and clapped their hands.
In the self-rule enclave of Jericho, Palestinian police danced in the streets alongside residents who waved flags, sang, marched and danced the Debka, an Arab folk dance.
The scene was similar in the occupied West Bank towns of Hebron and at Abu Dis University in East Jerusalem.
In the occupied West Bank towns of Ramallah and Nablus, celebrations turned ugly when celebrants clashed with Israeli soldiers. Youths threw stones at soldiers who retaliated by shooting tear gas into the crowds.
Palestinian Independance Day marks the anniversary of the Palestinian declaration of independence in 1988.
The beginning of the intifada or Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation which began at the same time was the inspiration for the declaration. Palestinians have celebrated the day ever since.
