- Story Text: An Israeli leader will meet three Arab leaders at an unprecedented summit meeting in Cairo on Thursday (February 2), Israel and Egypt said on Wednesday (February 1).
In Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak had invited Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Jordan's King Hussein and PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) leader Yasser Arafat to a summit held "to further promote the peace process and to assess the situation of the peace process, in all its aspects, in particular the Palestinian one." Israel confirmed the meeting while Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met Mubarak on a trip to Cairo on Wednesday.
Peres described the summit as a certainly an innovative effort in the history of the Middle East. He said it was a "coalition for peace made up of not just one or two parties but of three states and one autonomous area." Peres said the concept of a new Middle East was not just a geographical term, but also a political one which was upheld by all who believe the people of the Middle East can live in peace, prosperity, cooperation, tolerance and understanding.
