- Story Text: The exchange of prisoners of war between Israel and Egypt was completed on Thursday (22 November).
The last group of Israeli prisoners held by Egypt flew from Cairo to Tel Aviv. At the same time the last group of Egyptian prisoners in Israel flew home from Tel Aviv. Both groups travelled in Red Cross aircraft.
The 17 Israeli prisoners of war -- all pilots or senior army officers -- were greeted at Lod International Airport in Tel Aviv by the israeli Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General David Elazar.
The group was the last of the 247 Israelis taken by Egypt and included the most senior Israeli officer to be taken prisoner, Lieutenant Colonel Assaf Yaguri.
The previous day some 36 Israelis had been flown from Cairo to Lod Airport while several hundred Egyptians were flown home. This left about 1000 Egyptians of the 8,000 captured by Israel, to be repatriated. on Thursday.
After the last groups of prisoners had been exchanged, the Red Cross, which had been supervising the operation, said it would now concentrate on an exchange between Israel and Syria.
