- Story Text: INTRO: Israeli police have clashed with ultra-Orthodox Jews seeking the closure of two roads in Jerusalem during the Sabbath.
------------------------------------------------------------------ Thousands of religious Jews shouting "Shabbes" (Sabbath) on Saturday (July 13) rioted in Jerusalem, throwing stones and bottles as police, some on horseback, used water cannons to keep protesters from blocking the street.
Police said around 5,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews were protesting on Bar Ilan street, throwing objects and provoking police. Six people were detained.
Bar Ilan and Yirmiyahu streets have been the scenes of violent protests by devout Jews who want them closed to traffic from Friday evening to Saturday night.
On Saturday, a police officer was lightly injured in earlier clashes and police vehicles were damaged.
Some cars draped with banners of the left-wing Meretz party which has led a campaign to keep the roads open, drove past the site.
Police said religious Jews attacked a Meretz supporter riding a motorcycle and broke his arm.
