- Story Text: INTRO: Israeli police have stepped up security in Jerusalem as tens of thousands of Moslems make their way to the Al Aqsa mosque to attend the first Friday (January 2) prayers of the holy month of Ramadan.
Police said the increased number of road blocks and border checks were due to warnings of possible attacks by extreme right-wing Jewish organisations on Jerusalem's third holiest shrine.
Moslem holy sites have recently become a target of attack by the Jewish extremists, eager to sabotage the already shaky middle east peace process.
While some worshippers had to drive a long way to reach the mosque due to the police checkpoints, others remained indifferent to the security checks, stressing the importance of prayer.
Last week Israeli police arrested Jewish extremist Avigdor Eskin and charged him with plotting to throw a pig's head into a the Al-Aqsa Mosque to provoke Arab-Jewish tensions.
Later in the week an Israeli court found a Jewish woman guilty of racism after she put up posters depicting Islam's Prophet Mohammad as a pig -- an action that provoked riots and incensed the Moslem world.
