- Story Text: Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez arrived in Israel on Sunday (September 10) for a two-day official visit as part of a four-day tour of the Middle East designed to reaffirm the European Union's political and economic support for the peace process.
Gonzalez, acting President of the European Union, was welcomed at Ben Gurion airport by Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres who said the involvement of the EU will bring a new impetus to the peace process.
Gonzales is scheduled to dine with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in Jerusalem later in the day.
Gonzalez will also meet Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Chairman Yasser Arafat for lunch in Gaza on Monday.
Gonzalez' talks with Israeli government figures will centre on European support for the PLO-Israel peace process and European aid to Middle East countries.
Prime Minister Rabin last week sharply criticised the European Union (EU) for not doing enough for the peace process in the Middle East.
Spain is current holder of the EU presidency and Gonzalez's trip fulfils an obligation agreed at an EU summit in Cannes in June.
