- Story Text: INTRO: Dozens of Palestinian farmers have destroyed agricultural products to protest against Israel's closure of the border. Meanwhile in the West Bank, Palestinian policemen have trained in preparation for a possible Israeli pullback from Hebron.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Palestinian farmers on Sunday (October 27) destroyed vegetables and fruit at the Erez border crossing to protest against Israel's closure of the border which they say has resulted in huge losses of revenue.
Israel sealed its borders with the Gaza Strip and the West Bank last week following intelligence warnings that Islamic Jihad was planning suicide bombings in Israel to mark the October 26 anniversary of the assassination of Islamic Jihad leader Fathi Shqaqi in Malta.
The gunmen who carried out the assassination are widely believed to be Israeli agents.
The closure, the third one of its kind this year, is preventing thousands of Arab labourers from getting to their jobs in Israel and curtails Palestinian exports and imports.
Palestinian Agriculture Minister Abdel Jawad Saleh said it was common for Palestinian trucks to be stuck at the Israeli-Gaza border for days, loaded with agriculture products to be exported to Jordan.
Palestinians said last week that Israel's security forces were "paranoid." In the West Bank on Sunday, about 150 Palestinian policemen trained in Dahariya, 30km (19 miles) south of Hebron in preparation for a possible Israeli troop redeployment.
The Hebron police commander Tarik Zeid has promised that the Jewish settlers will be in safe hands when the Israeli army redeploys from Hebron where 400 Jewish settlers live in enclaves among 100,000 Arabs.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat are scheduled to meet U.S. Middle East peace envoy Dennis Ross to discuss obstacles to the long-delayed Israeli troop redeployment in Hebron.
