- Story Text: Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's self-rule Authority stepped up its fight on Saturday (April 29) against Israel's plans to confiscate Arab land in East Jerusalem but signalled that peace talks would continue.
The Authority, in a statement after its weekly meeting in Gaza, called for an urgent session of the Arab League in Cairo to discuss Israel's plans to take control of 53 hectares (133 acres) of land for Jewish housing and a police station.
It also appealed for help from the United States, Russia, Norway and the U.N. Security Council to reverse Israel's decision.
Palestinian minister of Planning, Nabil Shaath, said the Israeli expansion was in violation of the peace treaty signed by the Palestinians and Israelis in Oslo in September 1993.
Shaath did not however recommend pulling out of the peace talks, but proposed the adoption of more moderate methods "This constitutes the highest form of terrorism against the Palestinian people which really threatens their existence," Saeb Erekat, in charge of local government in the Authority, said about the land grab announced made on Thursday.
Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organisation views East Jerusalem, captured by Israel in 1967 and annexed, as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Israel regards all of the city as its capital.
