- Story Text: Israeli soldiers have shot and wounded at least 15 Palestinians, two seriously, as petrol bombs were thrown at them in the West Bank flashpoint of Hebron.
Masked Palestinians flung scores of petrol bombs on Friday (July 11) at Israeli soldiers who fired rubber-coated metal bullets from rooftops and from behind barricades along Shallaleh street, which divides Hebron into Israeli and Palestinian-controlled sections.
Doctors at a Palestinian field hospital set up behind the line of clashes said they took away at least 15 people who were knocked down by rubber-coated bullets. Doctor Lativ Zaytoun said two teenagers were in serious condition after being shot in the head.
Israeli military sources said in a statement troops used "crowd-control methods" against Palestinians hurling stones, and petrol bombs. The statement said there were no casualties on the Israeli side.
Hebron has been a scene of almost daily unrest since a right-wing Jewish woman plastered storefronts with anti-Moslem posters depicting the Moslem Prophet Mohammad as a pig two weeks ago. Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) have been frozen for four months.
Religous feelings were further inflamed when Palestinians found al-Yaacoubia school was ransacked and four copies of the Koran torn up. Palestinians claimed Israeli soldiers desecrated the holy books but the Israeli army denied the charge.
The clashes on Friday began when five masked youths burned two Israeli flags while others attacked a group of soldiers holed up inside the school.
Some of the demonstrators used slingshots. Witnesses said more than 130 petrol bombs were thrown at soldiers, setting the stone-strewn road between the embattled groups on fire. They said two explosions were heard, apparently from homemade bombs.
