- Story Text: INTRO: Israeli police have clashed with right-wing Jewish activists on Temple Mount in Jerusalem. There were a number of arrests.
--------------------------------------------------------------- Israeli police have detained several right-wing Jewish activists who tried to force their way onto the biblical Jewish Temple Mount.
Members of the Temple Mount Faithful group were arrested after trying to jump a police barricade and break through a gate in Jerusalem's Old City which leads up to the al-Aqsa mosque compound.
Thousands of Jewish worshippers had gathered at Western Wall, Judaism's holiest shrine, to commemorate the destruction of ancient Jewish temples.
Dozens of Jewish ultra-nationalists waved flags, shouted slogans and sounded ram's horns while lining up to enter the mount under police escort.
Police on Thursday (July 25) allowed Jewish activists to enter the mosque complex in pairs after a High Court ruled one year ago that the group should be allowed on the mount to visit but not to pray.
But many of the activists routinely try to enter the area for prayer and are thrown out by police.
