- Story Text: INTRO: Israeli police have clashed with ultra-Orthodox Jews seeking the closure of two roads in Jerusalem during the Sabbath.
----------------------------------------------------------------- Hundreds of religious Jews rioted at the site overnight, lightly wounding a police officer and damaging vehicles, police sources said on Saturday (July 13).
The rioters threw stones and bottles in Jerusalem'sBar Ilan road. Six people were detained.
Bar Ilan and Yirmiyahu streets have been the scenes of violent protests by devout Jews who want them closed to traffic during the Sabbath from sunset on Friday evening until sunset on Saturday.
Ritual Jewish law bans travel on the Sabbath.
Transport Minister Yitzhak Levy, himself an Orthodox Jew, signed an order banning traffic on the two streets when Sabbath services were held on Friday evening and Saturday morning.
But Israel's High Court on Friday, ruling on a petition by left-wing legislators who cited religious coercion, cancelled the order and gave the government 15 days to explain why the roads should not remain open.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews and members of the left-wing Meretz party were both planning to protest at the site later on Saturday.
