- Story Text: INTRO: The Israeli army has confirmed it fired on Lebanese army positions on Friday during an operation against Hizbollah targets in South Lebanon. Israel issued a statement saying it fired on the Lebanese soldiers because they had interfered in the raid.
----------------------------------------------------------------- Two Israeli helicopters fired a total of three rockets on Friday (September 12) at a Lebanese army position, near the village of Arabsalim, north of Nabatiyeh, in southern Lebanon.
A few hours earlier, there was fierce fighting in the Jabal al-Rafei area, on the edge of Israel's south Lebanon occupation zone, between Hizbollah (Party of God) guerrillas and Israeli troops.
The dead and wounded were rushed to Hamoud hospital, in Sidon City, in Lebanon. Six Lebanese soldiers were killed in the attack and five others wounded. One civilian woman was killed during the raid.
Israel said it fired on the Lebanese army because it had interfered with its military operation by firing mortar shells, machine guns and anti-aircraft fire towards Israeli forces.
An Israeli army statement said its troops killed four pro-Iranian Hizbollah fighters. One Israeli soldier claimed the guerillas were found with Lebanese weapons beside them, proof, he continued, that Lebanon is giving them military support. In Beirut, Hizbollah said it lost contact with four of its guerrillas after the fight.
The fighting was the heaviest since September 5, when Israel carried out a failed military operation in southern Lebanon in which 12 Isareli soldiers died.
It was the 61st Israeli attack on Lebanon and brought the total number of Moslem and Arab guerillas killed this year to 49.
Thirty-one Israeli soldiers have been killed in the same period.
