- Story Text: An earthquake shook parts of Israel, the Gaza Strip and West Bank early on Wednesday (November 22), waking Israelis and Palestinians with a jolt.
In Israel's southern resort town of Eilat, several hotels were temporarily evacuated. Cracks and gaping holes were visible in buildings and there were large holes and upheaved cement along main streets of the city.
Sheets of broken glass lay inside shops and businesses.
Sport Hotel manager Ami Meron said the earthquake lasted 25-30 seconds and that television sets were damaged and glass was broken.
"It is not as serious as we thought at first but we evacuated the guests and served them coffee and tea and breakfast," Meron said.
Israel's chief seismologist Avi Shapira said the quake registered 6.2 on the Richter scale.
"An earthquake was felt this morning all over Israel and we have determined the epicenter to be in the southern part of the Gulf of Eilat," Shapira said.
"The magnitude of the quake registered 6.2 on the Richter scale which for Israel is quite a big earthquake." In Eilat, an Israeli tourist aged 66 died of a heart attack and 13 people were treated, mostly for cuts.
