- Story Text: INTRO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel is seeking a different formula to resume peace negotiations with Syria avoiding the principal Syrian demand to cede the Golan Heights before talks can begin.
------------------------------------------------------------------- Speaking to business people in New York City on Tuesday (September 10), Netanyahu said there was "no path" towards the resumption of peace talks with Syria, and another approach was needed before such talks could begin.
Syrian-Israel peace talks ground to a halt in May and Netanyahu's subsequent election victory put the peace process on hold.
Netanyahu told members of the Association for a Better New York that Syria wanted the Golan Heights to be ceded before the talks could begin. As the talks were to determine the future of the Golan, he said, Syria was asking for what it wanted "right from the start in order to enter the negotiations." Netanyahu said he was more hopeful about negotiations with the Palestinians because both sides had a vested interest in them succeeding.
The prime minister is on a visit to the United States, accompanied by his wife Sarah. He said he had briefed U.S.
President Bill Clinton on Syrian demands during his visit to the White House on Monday.
