- Story Text: INTRO: Israel will ease on Monday (July 29) the total ban it imposed last week on Palestinians entering the country from the occupied West Bank.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Israel sealed off the West Bank and Gaza Strip after Islamic militant suicide bombers in February and March killed 59 people in Israel.
It subsequently eased the closure slightly but on Friday (July 26) again sealed the West Bank completely after Arab gunmen killed three Israelis in a drive-by shooting in Israel not far from the West Bank.
Israel issued 2,083 more work permits last week, raising to 27,483 the number of Palestinians allowed into Israel to work.
At least 12,000 of the total number of permits issued were from the West Bank and Sunday's announcement meant these workers would again be allowed into Israel.
The Palestinian self-rule Authority, which controls parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip under interim peace deals signed with Israel's previous government, has demanded that the closure be lifted completely.
It calls the measure, which has devastated the Palestinian economy, collective punishment. Many Palestinians rely on work in Israel to support their families.
