  • Story Text: Israel has detained at least 50 Palestinians in a new crackdown on Islamic activists and forums it suspects of ties to Islamic militant groups in the occupied West Bank, Palestinians said on Tuesday (January 24).

    "We are carrying out a war to the end against Hamas and Islamic Jihad ...we have a lot of work to do," Major-General Ilan Biran, head of Israel's central region command, told Israel Radio, without giving details of the operation.

    The campaign began on Monday night, one day after 19 Israelis, most of them Israeli soldiers, were killed in an Islamic suicide bombing in central Israel.

    Palestinians in various parts of the West Bank said security forces went around with buses to arrest activists suspected of ties to the Hamas and Islamic Jihad groups.

    They estimated that at least 50 people were detained. Israel Radio said more than 60 Palestinians were taken into custody.

    At the Ali mosque in Al Bira, a village near Ramallah in the West Bank, pages from the Holy Koran book were scattered on the floor and religious cabinets were broken into after a search.

    In the Gaza Strip, the final stretch of the border fence was being completed but only scattered army roadblocks were in place along the much-longer frontier between the West Bank and the Jewish state.
