- Story Text: INTRO: Thousands of Palestinians went on the march through cities in the West Bank on Tuesday, protesting at Israel's security clampdown following the suicide bombings by Hamas terrorists.
Israel effectively blockaded two million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip after the first of the four attacks.
----------------------------------------------------------------- Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip took to the streets on Tuesday (March 12) to urge Israel to lift its blockade of their towns and to protest at Islamic militant suicide attacks.
The demonstrations organised by Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority came on the eve of a summit of world leaders in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to try to salvage the peace process.
"Listen to us in Sharm el-Sheikh, the baby and the old man have gone hungry," some 4,000 demonstrators chanted in Arabic at a march in the West Bank town of Jenin.
Israel imposed a blockade on the West Bank last week cutting off Palestinian villages from each other following four Islamic militant suicide bombings that killed 58 people in Irseal.
The blockade, which many Palestinians say is the most severe collective punishment measure since the 1991 Gulf War, has nearly paralysed life in the West Bank.
Senior Palestinian officials led the demonstrations which took place in the PLO-ruled towns of Jenin, Nablus, Tulkarm, Qalqilyah, Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jericho and Gaza.
A convoy of trucks carrying merchants drove from Gaza City to the border with Israel demanding Israel lift its closure which has cut food supplies and caused severe shortages.
