- Story Text: - INTRO: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has played down reports of imminent negotiations with Syria. He was speaking after a brief meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok on his way to Washington, D.C.
Netanyahu arrived at Amsterdam's Schipol airport on Wednesday (February 12) while travelling to a meeting in the United States with President Bill Clinton.
Kok and Netanyahu held a news conference at the airport, and discussed bilateral and international issues as the Netherlands is the present European Union president.
When asked at a news conference about possible negotiations with Syria, Netanyahu said he didn't expect Washington to bring Syria to the negotiating table. He said that was a decision for Syria and if Syria wanted to negotiate it could come to the peace table.
Asked about his meeting with Clinton, Netanyahu said as his administration was just seven months old and Clinton's had just been renewed it was a good time for Israel and its major ally to discuss how both saw the interests, especially the security interests of Israel as the final settlement negotiations with the Palestinians and possible negotiations with Syria approached.
Netanyahu originally planned to make a full scale state visit to the Netherlands but the trip was curtailed when he had to attend a memorial service in Israel.
Last week Palestinian President Yasser Arafat visited the Netherlands and also held talks with Kok.
