- Story Text: Thousands of Israelis demonstrated on Tuesday (June 27) against an Israeli withrawal from the Golan Heights and called on the government to stop talks with Syria.
The demonstrators shouted anti-government slogans and waved banners calling on the government to cease talks with Syria, briefly blocking a main road near the Golani junction, a key intersection on the way to the heights.
Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of the opposition Likud party was one of the speakers addressing the demonstrators.
The army chiefs of Israel and Syria opened talks in Washington on Tuesday, in a new United States push to conclude an agreement on Israeli withdrawal from the Heights in less than a year's time.
The two sides, sworn enemies for decades, are discussing security arrangements to be put into place if Israel and Syria can agree on the extent and timing of a pullback on the strategic Golan plateau, captured by Israel in 1967.
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, commenting on the Israeli-Syrian talks, said: "We do not underrate the gaps which exist between us and the problems which are loaded all over the road." Peres added that he was optimistic about the beginning but that he foresaw "a great deal of difficulties."
