- Story Text: The Israeli finance minister has announced that Israel has removed all restrictions on its citizens in their use of foreign currency.
Finance Minister Yaacov Neeman, flanked by Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu, told a news conference in Jerusalem on Tuesday (April 28) that all restrictions would be removed immediately.
The liberalisation, timed to coincide with Israel's 50th anniversary this week, was a key move in making the Israeli economy more competitive.
Legislators, who were briefed on the package by Neeman on Tuesday morning, said earlier the measures would free Israelis from virtually all curbs on foreign currency holdings and transactions, in most cases within the next few days.
Legislators said individuals would be allowed to pay for local transactions in dollars.
Overseas, they would be allowed to buy and sell Israeli currency and property, among other things. Most of those measures would go into effect within days but officials did not give a timetable.
