  • Story Text: INTRO: The Turkish Defence Minister has arrived in Israel for a three-day visit. He was welcomed to Tel Aviv by a military guard of honour before taking part in talks with his Israeli counterpart.

    Turkish Defence Minister Turhan Tayan was in Tel Aviv on Wednesday (April 30) for a visit which is part of increasing defence cooperation between the two countries.

    The trip was a further blow to the prestige of Islamist Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan who won elections 16 months ago partly on a promise to cut military ties to the Jewish state.

    Tayan, from the secularist wing of Erbakan's coalition government, began talks with Israeli Defence Minister Yitzhak Mordechai on Wednesday morning.

    Turkey and Israel have signed defence cooperation agreements which drew an angry response from Iran and many in the Arab world.

    Israeli planes have flown training flights in Turkey under the accords.

    Turhan Tayan was scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, army officials, and Israel's President Ezer Weizman during his three-day stay.
