- Story Text: Top PLO negotiator Nabil Shaath demanded on Tuesday (August 16) that Israel provide a specific date for expanding Palestinian powers to parts of the West Bank outside the self-rule area of Jericho.
Speaking after talks between Israel and the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) in Gaza, Shaath said he expected a clear date for the start of implementation of early empowerment in the West Bank to be set during a continuation of the talks in the Egyptian town of Alexandria on Wednesday (August 17).
"(The Israeli government) keeps using one item to blackmail us on the other items, and linking issues together is a clear violation of the (peace) agreement (between Israel and the PLO)," Shaath said.
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said in Egypt on Wednesday that Israel and the PLO were "struggling very hard" to keep their peace deal on Palestinian self-rule from collapse.
After one Israeli was killed and six wounded in militant Moslem attacks in Gaza on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin said the future of peace moves depended on the PLO's making a serious effort to suppress the violence.
Under terms of last September's peace deal between Israel and the PLO powers in five spheres of life were to be extended to Palestinians in those parts of the West Bank that remained under Israeli rule after the handover in May of Gaza and Jericho.
