- Story Text: Shimon Shamir, Israel's first ambassador to Jordan since the two countries made peace last October, crossed the Jordan River into the kingdom on Thursday (April 6) to take up his new post.
"I know it's a very big responsibility," said Shamir, a professor of Middle East studies who was previously an ambassador to Egypt.
"I feel privileged being the first ambassador and I understand it's the beginning of a long road which will lead to a better future for our people," he told reporters after walking across the wooden Allenby Bridge.
"Peace between governments is the first step and then peace between people which will be achieved through hard work and open dialogue between all members of society," he said.
Marwan Muasher, Jordan's new ambassador to Israel, entered Israel a few hours later to take up his assignment under the October 26 treaty that ended 46 years of hostility.
Both men were to present credentials and officially take up their posts on April 10. The countries had been represented at charges d'affairs level since the treaty.
