- Story Text: Israeli soldiers beat Palestinian demonstrators and detained 13 on Monday (April 17) during a march in the occupied West Bank to demand the release of thousands of prisoners held by Israel, witnesses said.
Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip marked Palestinian Prisoner Day with marches and demonstrations calling for the immediate release of all Palestinian detainees.
In the West Bank town of Ramallah, Palestinians marched through the city centre, waving banners demanding the release of prisoners held in Israeli jails.
Israeli army troops on patrol in the city attempted to break up the demonstration, hitting some of the protesters.
Palestinian youths who witnessed the events began hurling stones and rocks at the soldiers, who retaliated by firing tear gas.
The demonstration was one of several organised by the Palestinian Prisoners Club -- an ad-hoc group fighting for prisoners' release -- to mark the annual Prisoners Day.
In Gaza City, about 200 Palestinian women held a demonstration at the offices of the Red Crescent humanitarian organisation.
They called on the Palestinian Authority to release their relatives, jailed by the Authority on suspicion of belonging to the militant Moslem groups, Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
The women held pictures of their relatives, waved signs, and called on Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) chairman Yasser Arafat to release their family members.
