- Story Text: INTRO: Palestinian and Israeli officials overseeing the implementation of PLO-Israel peace deals have met for the first time since Israeli elections last May.
The meeting, chaired by Palestinian official Saeb Erekat and Israeli former Chief of Staff Dan Shomron, got underway at the offices of the PLO in self-ruled Jericho in the West Bank on Monday (September 9).
Palestinians said the talks would focus on the issue of Hebron but they will also ask the Israelis to lift the closure imposed on the West Bank and Gaza after a wave of bombings earlier in the year.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat decided on the date of the meeting during their first summit last week.
Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) officials and foreign diplomats said their meeting had revived stalled peace talks between the two sides as Netanyahu had previously opposed the talks launched in 1993 by Israel's former Labour government.
Palestinians have complained that Netanyahu's government, formed in June, is not honouring the agreements. One key agreement was Israel's commitment to withdraw from the West Bank town of Hebron, which is home to 100,000 Palestinians and around 400 Jewish settlers.
Israel evacuated six West Bank cities and nearby villages under its interim accord with the PLO but delayed its withdrawal from Hebron after Islamic suicide bombings killed 59 people in the Jewish state in February and March.
Netanyahu has said he is examining ways to implement the withdrawal while guaranteeing the settlers' security.
A further Israeli troop redeployment in the West Bank was scheduled to begin on September 7.
