- Story Text: Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat met Israeli Foreign Minister Ehud Barak during the early hours of Tuesday (January 9) morning despite tension between the PLO and Israel over the killing of a wanted Palestinian bomber.
The two men shook hands in a relaxed atmosphere at the start of their meeting at a hotel in Paris where both are to attend a conference on Tuesday of 50 donor nations and international organisations aiding the palestinians.
Arafat accused Israel on Sunday (January 7) of killing Hamas militant Yahya Ayyash, who was believed to be behind a suicide bombing campaign that killed nearly 80 people in Israel but Israeli officials said the fact that the meeting was taking place showed both sides were determined to press ahead with peace efforts despite the killing.
The one day donors' conference is due to review the progress of a two billion U.S. dollar five-year international aid programme, which has been delayed by a slow start to Palestinian self-rule and bureaucracy in donor states.
