  • Story Text: Jordan's first ambassador to Israel, Marwan Muasher, presented his credentials to Israeli President Ezer Weizman in Jerusalem on Monday (April 10).

    The new Ambassador met the Israeli president and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres at the President's residence where a reception was held in his honour.

    Jordan and Israel exchanged ambassadors on Thursday under a peace treaty signed on October 26, 1994 that ended 46 years of hostility. The countries had been represented at charges d'affairs level since the treaty.

    Egypt is the only other Arab state officially at peace with Israel since 1979.

    Muasher's counterpart, the Israeli Ambassador designate to Jordan, Shimon Shamir, crossed into the Hashemite kingdom on Thursday and will also take up his post on Monday.
