- Story Text: INTRO: Israeli soldiers have again confronted Palestinian students wanting to enter their university in the West Bank city of Hebron.
Israeli security forces barricaded Hebron University on Tuesday (December 10), barring students who wanted to enter the West Bank campus in defiance of a closure order by Israel which has been in effect since March.
The students were demonstrating after a denial by Israel that it had agreed to reopen the university.
The students gathered near the campus and some tried to break in, but they were stopped by Israeli soldiers who had surrounded the site early in the morning.
The soldiers briefly detained one student.
The vice-president of Hebron University, Awni al-Khatib,said the students had a right to be there and the soldiers should leave.
Palestinians said many of the students later left the compound, but that tensions remained high as others held a sit-in near the campus.
The Israeli army said it was checking the incident.
The closure of Hebron University was one of Israel's reactions to suicide bombings that killed 59 people early this year.
About 300 students and faculty members broke into the campus on Monday vowing to resume studies.
A standoff with Israeli soldiers ended when members of the Palestinian Legislative Council negotiated a deal, under which they said Israel agreed immediately to open the campus of another technical college in the city and to discuss arrangements for reopening the university.
But an Israeli army official said no deal was reached and the closure order on the university remained in effect.
