  • Story Text: Israeli troops and Palestinian protesters clashed in the West Bank on Thursday (December 7) as Israel's handover of authority to the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) went ahead.

    In the city of Nablus troops fired tear-gas and rubber bullets at stone-throwing demonstrators.

    While the violence continued, Israel handed over offices of the administrative arm of its occupation forces to Palestinians in the town of Hawarah near Nablus.

    And in the Gaza Strip, PLO leader Yasser Arafat met United States peace envoy Dennis Ross to discuss implementation of the peace accord.

    "Coordination between the Palestinians and the Israelis has been increasingly good and I think that that in itself is going to ensure that the implementation process will go forward effectively," Ross said afterwards.

    Neither man referred to the violence.

    In the southern West Bank village of Tarqumiyah, a row over the building of new roads for the use of Jewish settlers erupted again, as Palestinians attempted to stop bulldozers working.

    There were scuffles between protesters and Israeli soldiers.

    Palestinians have accused Israel of confiscating some of the best West Bank farmland.
