- Story Text: The time of the disengagement of Egyptian and Israeli forces along the Suez Canal front was agreed by the Chiefs of Staff of each side at a meeting at Kilometre IOI on the Suez-Cairo road on Sunday (20 January). A United Nations spokesman told newsmen the following day (21st January) that the withdrawal would start on Friday (25 January) and would be completed by 5th March.
The Finnish Commander of the UN peace-keeping force, General Ensio Siilasvuo presided over the meeting, which was held up half an hour by the late arrival of the Israeli Chief of Staff, General David Elazar. His helicopter was apparently delayed by bad weather. Major General Mohammed el-Gamasy led Egypt's delegation.
The Generals' meeting was the first of four which are expected to be held daily at Kilomtre IOI. Their purpose is to hammer out the practical details of the January 18th agreement on withdrawal, which was signed at Kilometre IOI.
United Nations officers are to supervise the withdrawal. General Elazar later told journalists that the Israeli pull back from Egypt will begin in the south and continue in stages over four weeks. The evacuation will be matched by a thinning out of Egyptian forces on the east bank of the waterway.
