- Story Text: The newly-elected Israeli Cabinet held its first regular weekly meeting on Sunday (17 March) since the new government was formed. Under consideration was Israel's future policy for a separation of forces agreement with Syria.
The Cabinet broke with tradition by allowing a Visnews cameraman to film the meeting.
One of the Cabinet's first decisions affected the man who was involved in Prime Minister Golda Meir's recent threat not to form a government, Defence Minister Moshe Dayan. Mr. Dayan was appointed to represent Israel at the Washington talks with United States' secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, about the disengagement of forces issue.
As the decision was announced, Syrian and Israeli forces were exchanging heavy artillery barrages in the Golan Heights area for the sixth day running.
Absent from the Cabinet meeting was Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban, who was already in Washington for talks with Dr. Kissinger.
The date of Mr. Dayan's departure for the United States was not announced after the Cabinet meeting, nor were Israel's terms for a disengagement of forces with Syria. However, it's known that Israel is calling for strict reciprocation of concessions by both sides.
