- Story Text: Both Palestinians and Israelis on Monday mourned King
Hussein's death as a great loss to the cause of peace.
The Palestinian Authority declared three days of mourning
and the Jewish State said it would lower flags to half-mast
during the King's funeral.
The Palestinian Authority declared on Monday (February
8) a three-day mourning period while Israel ordered flags
lowered to half-mast for the funeral of King Hussein and
called its peace with Jordan a monument to his memory.
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and Israeli President
Ezer Weizman both led delegations to the king's funeral.
King Hussein, Israel's closest Arab friend, forged a peace
treaty with prime minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1994 that ended a
formal state of war dating back to Israel's creation in 1948.
King Hussein gave an emotional eulogy at Rabin's funeral
in 1995.Two years later he paid condolence calls at the homes
of families of seven Israeli schoolgirls shot dead by a
Jordanian soldier at their border.
On Monday, Palestinians in Gaza Strip and the West Bank
put up black flags to mark the king's death.
Palestinian Television broadcast readings from the Koran
to mourn the monarch, who in 1970 spearheaded a bloody
crackdown in his kingdom on guerrillas of the Palestine
Liberation
Organisation (PLO).
King Hussein ruled the West Bank, including Arab East
Jerusalem, until the areas were captured by Israel in the 1967
Middle East war.
