- Story Text: A Palestinian suicide bomber has killed at least 18
people, including six children, and wounded scores of other
people in a fast-food restaurant packed with families on
Thursday.
The blast ripped the Sbarro pizzeria apart while it
was packed with families during the lunch hour rush, leaving
the restaurants facade covered with blood, glass and pizza
boxes.
Bodies were sent hurtling through the air and left strewn
over the pavement.
"Yasser Arafat utterly failed to fulfil the terms of the
cease fire. As a result we have 18 Israelis dead and nearly
70 wounded today," said Israeli spokesman Dore Gold.
The Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility for the
attack in a statement faxed to Reuters in Beirut.
Palestinian leaders blamed the attack on Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon's tough policies, and Sharon was due to
meet his defence minister to consider a response. He has
ordered military strikes after such attacks in the past.
"It is the responsibility of Sharon. He provoked it. He
wanted it and he waited for it. This is ideal atmosphere for
Sharon. His policy was dependent on one thing - he wanted to
suppress the Palestinian people and to close the door of any
negotiation and any political solution," said Palestinian
Minister of Information Yasser Abed Rabbo.
It was the worst single incident since a Palestinian
suicide bomber killed 21 people, mainly young Israelis, at a
Tel Aviv disco on June 1.
Prior to Thursday's violence, at least 513 Palestinians,
132 Israelis and 13 Israeli Arabs had been killed since last
September.
